ABOUT THE SHOW

Dating nowadays can be quite odd. It involves apps like eHarmony, Match, or Tinder; swiping; and fake or outdated pictures and profiles… It all seems so much easier than 100 years ago… Or was it? The Importance of Being Earnest is a farcical look at dating before cell phones, but not before odd ideas, false identities, and family interference. Classic English drawing-room fun!

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script

  • REMEMBER: Casting is subjective and completely based on someone else’s opinion. Sometimes casting decisions are based on age, looks, height, or how you look next to other cast members. You will not get cast in every role you want and sometimes you won’t get cast at all. If you are not cast in this show, you should still celebrate the fact that you gave it your best shot. If this is not the right show for you, we hope to see you at the next audition.

ROLES AVAILABLE:

JACK (JOHN) WORTHING - 25-28, country estate owner. Jack was a foundling, adopted by a man who left him the estate and the care of his granddaughter Cecily. He appears to be a responsible and respectable young man. (Posh country British accent)

ALGERNON MONCRIEFF - 22-25, Jack's best friend. Algernon is brilliant, witty, selfish, and amoral — a spoiled rich kid who still manages to be delightful. (Posh town British accent)

GWENDOLEN FAIRFAX - 23-26, Algernon's cousin. Gwendolen is the epitome of high fashion and society: sophisticated, intellectual, and utterly pretentious. (Posh town British accent)

CECILY CARDEW - 18, Jack's ward. Cecily is obsessed with the name Ernest and intrigued by the idea of wickedness. She has led a very sheltered life in the country. (Posh country British accent)

LADY BRACKNELL - 45, Gwendolen's mother and Algernon's aunt. Snobbish, mercenary, and domineering, Lady Bracknell makes hilarious pronouncements — though she never intends them to be funny (unlike Algernon). (Snobby posh British accent)

MISS PRISM - 50s, Cecily's governess. An endless source of pedantic bromides and clichés, Miss Prism’s severe pronouncements often go so far over the top they become hilarious. (Middle-class British accent, trying to sound posh)

REV. CANON CHAUSUBLE  - 50s, rector on Jack’s estate. The Reverend is used to country life and is generally easy-going. (Middle-class British accent)

LANE - 40s, Algernon’s manservant. Lane is an expert at hiding his reactions to Algernon’s classism and snobbery. (Not cockney — a polished lower-class accent)

MERRIMAN -40s, Jack’s butler or housekeeper. (Not cockney — a polished lower-class accent)
