Theatre Aurora's Youth Program is run by trained theatre practitioners, all who have a passion for theatre, performance, and teaching.
Curriculum is based on interest and skill level of the participants. We welcome youth who are both new to the theatre and veterans of the stage to join our program. Leadership and apprentice opportunities are available for those with higher skill levels. Youth will be given the opportunity to take on roles based on their interest and skill level.
Registration fees include all program supplies, a free junior membership at Theatre Aurora (allowing the youth to work on other productions and receive theatre information). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic main-stage productions will NOT be available for youth at this time.
This year’s programs for both Theatre Kids and Young Company will be spent both in the theatre and online using Zoom.
The program will follow all protocols from the Province of Ontario and York Region Health with regards to opening and maintaining the space, and how to keep the students, educators and everyone safe.
Mandatory mask policy in place
Safe Social Distancing while in the theatre
Increased hand washing/use of sanitizer by students and educators
Increased cleaning of the theatre space
Health checks before entering the building
Continued communication between parents/guardians, students and the Director of Youth Programming
Theatre Kids: ages 10 – 13 years old
September - December 2020
This session of the Theatre Kids program focuses on the learning and development of acting and theatre skills, from movement, voice acting, and character development, writing, design work, and directing. The program concludes with a filmed showcase performance where youth will perform their favourite work.
Class Time 11am – 1pm*
*To keep our program numbers inline with the Province of Ontario and York Region Health we may divide the class into two separate classes if we have a large enrolment; this will be decided the week prior to class starting and will be determined by the Director of Youth Programming and Educators:
Class A – 9am – 11am
Class B – 11:30am – 1:30pm
Young Company: 14 – 18 years old
September - December 2020
In previous year’s this program would run year round, we have chosen that for this year, due to COVID-19, we would instead run it as two sessions: Autumn and Winter/Spring.
For this session the Young Company students will focus on a similar but more advanced program to the Theatre Kids, focusing on their development of acting and theatre skills, writing, design work and directing.
New this year the Young Company will also participate in the final filmed showcase by showing off their work and assisting with the Theatre Kids where/if needed.
Class time: 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Class Dates for both Theatre Kids and Young Company:
September – 12, 19, 26
October - 3, 17, 24, 31
November – 7, 14, 21, 28
December 5, 12, 15, 17, 19
Please note the last 3 days of December will be possible filming dates for the final showcase, some students may not be required but everyone should be available!!
As in past years, Theatre Aurora will be raising funds for our local Aurora Food Pantry. In the past we have done a food-drive, in keeping with safe social distancing it was decided for us to film the showcase and have it available for rent with proceeds going to the food bank and to continue our giving back to the community of Aurora and York Region.
Program Cost: $200/student
Registration is a two step process of sign-up via Google Forms and payment through Arts People.
