THEATRE AURORA
|
| History |
In November 1958 a group called 'The Aurora Drama Workshop' presented the play 'Tovarich' at the Aurora District High School.
Then in 1973, amalgamation with the Aurora Musical Theatre Society resulted in Theatre Aurora being formed.
The following year, the Town of Aurora offered a lease on a disused cement factory at 150 Henderson Drive. Extensive renovations and modifications, through the efforts of Theatre Aurora members and patrons, transformed the building into the Factory Theatre.
There were more changes in 1980, with a new foyer and raised seating. Then in 1999 the current seats were installed.
We are very proud of our Theatre. We have been a member of the Association of Community Theatres - Central Ontario (ACT-CO) for many years, and also a member of Theatre Ontario. Our group has received many nominations and awards at the annual ACT-CO festival, and we have even been honoured with an invitation to remount a production for the Theatre Ontario Festival.
We have a strong mandate for education, especially for our young members. In 1988 a Youth Group was initiated, covering the 7-17 age range. Theatre Aurora has provided the talented resources, through volunteer members and professionals in the field, to enhance this work.
In 2003 Theatre Aurora became incorporated as a charitable organization.
For the future, we plan to work with the Town of Aurora to enhance and improve our home. In 2005, an air conditioning system was installed, and a summer show was added, to start each season.
A complete list of the plays presented by Theatre Aurora since 1958 is available via the link below. This includes productions of the Aurora Drama Workshop, which preceded Theatre Aurora, and also the Youth Group productions.
